Korean Air has announced its largest-ever aircraft investment, signaling a bold step toward becoming a global top-tier airline.

Korean Air’s Record-Breaking Boeing Investment
Korean Air signed an MOU with Boeing for 103 next-generation fuel-efficient aircraft, valued at $36.2 billion (₩50 trillion). This marks the airline’s largest order and the biggest Boeing fleet order by an Asian carrier. Including a $1B purchase of 19 spare engines and a $13.8B long-term engine maintenance service agreement with GE Aerospace, the total U.S. investment package amounts to ₩70 trillion.
Preemptive Investment Ahead of Merger
With the upcoming merger with Asiana Airlines, Chairman Cho Won-tae emphasized that securing next-generation aircraft is essential for strengthening global competitiveness. Models such as the Boeing 777-9, 787-10, 737-10, and 777-8F will be introduced by 2030, simplifying the fleet to three Boeing and two Airbus types.
Strengthened Partnerships with Boeing and GE
The signing took place in Washington, D.C., during the “Korea-U.S. Manufacturing Renaissance Roundtable.” Boeing highlighted that the deal will ensure top-level fuel efficiency and operational stability, while GE reinforced its long-term collaboration through spare engine purchases and service agreements.

Economic and Job Impact in the U.S.
According to Boeing, the order is expected to support approximately 135,000 U.S. jobs across its supply chain and the broader aerospace ecosystem.
Challenges for Korea’s Aviation Industry
This decision represents more than a fleet renewal. It underscores three critical imperatives:
- Preemptive procurement amid post-pandemic supply chain delays
- Transition to fuel-efficient, eco-friendly aircraft under tightening emission regulations
- Fleet simplification to maximize operational efficiency and competitiveness

The Key Takeaway
This investment marks a clear signal of Korean Air’s ambition to rise as a global top-tier airline. By integrating aircraft, engines, and maintenance, the airline secures both stability and competitiveness, setting a new benchmark for Korea’s aviation industry.
