India to Launch National Container Shipping Line by 2030

India has announced plans to establish a national container shipping line by 2030 and build half its vessels at domestic shipyards by 2035, signaling a bold push for maritime self-reliance.

National Container Shipping Line by 2030

India aims to launch a national container carrier by 2030 and build 50% of its fleet at domestic shipyards by 2035. The government will work with shipyards on green ship design and financing support to boost autonomy.

Roadmap for Green Vessels and Fuels

According to the India Times, India will expand the share of ships powered by LNG, methanol, and hydrogen to 30% by 2047. The roadmap includes port electrification and green bunkering infrastructure, forming a “Green Shipping Corridor.”

Expanding Ports and Shipbuilding Capacity

Reports highlight megaport projects at Vadhavan and Galathea Bay, alongside plans to secure a 5% global shipbuilding share by 2030. Ten world-class shipyards will be established via public–private partnerships to lower logistics costs.

Boosting Domestic Trade and Exports

Inland waterway freight has increased over 300% since 2014, cutting logistics costs and carbon emissions. The government views shipping and ports as core to achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030.

Talent Development and Tech Innovation

Plans include training 50,000 maritime professionals and investing in autonomous and digital ships under a new national shipbuilding policy. India will also develop AI, IoT, and blockchain-powered smart ports.

Geopolitical Hub Ambition

With over half of Asia’s maritime cargo passing through the Indian Ocean, India seeks to become a strategic hub across Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Europe routes, strengthening multilateral port cooperation, tech transfer, and maritime diplomacy.
